I loved you once

in a swimming pool in France

it was summer and it rained

I looked at you

and loved you then

I never told you

but it’s true

I loved you

and us

and the chance of all things

and even though

it didn’t last

I will always love

that day I loved you.

We floated down French rivers

on a boat pushed by steam

passed rolling hills and vineyards

baked by the sun.

Wine is stored sunlight, Galileo said.

The crickets sang to us

as we’d walk to old churches

that smelled like old stone

where light sprinkled through stained glass

in melancholies of muted paints

dancing around our footprints.

I’d write poems and ideas in a little black book—

I want to see the world with you, I wrote.

You drew the rooftops

and took pictures of wooden doors—

then we’d walk to little towns

down little Roman paths.

“This is heaven,” I thought.

Every heaven is different,

but this is mine—

we’d drink wine at old cafés

and espresso in tiny cups

we’d buy cheese and bread and walk the fields

to the old oak trees always in the middle
